Established in 1995, A Company of Girls (ACOG) began as a program of East End Children’s Workshop in collaboration with A Place for Girls and the Girl Scouts. The program was originally funded by a grant from the Office of Substance Abuse as a one-year pilot program. After successfully completing the year they were notified they were to be re-funded and that OSA was also funding an evaluation of the program.

In its second year the program separated from the Girls Scouts and became a stand-alone program for EECW. During this time the program received the “Coming Up Taller” Award, an award presented by the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities for being an exemplary arts and humanities program which foster young people’s intellectual and creative development.

When EECW was merged with PROP (now Opportunity Alliance) ACOG became a program of PROP and in 2006, ACOG became it’s own independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
