Day One: Nature Walk. Orchard Drawing. Observation.

October 18, 2017

Today we kicked off our year-long project/collaboration with the Maine Audubon.

[Ceiba's 10/18/17 Journal Entry]
“Today was October 18.  It was warm and sunny, we went on a nature walk.

Then we were going to set up our areas, but we were too tired

so we just went to the orchard and sat in the sun and drew.”

Doug Hitchcox, the Maine Audubon Naturalist of Gilsland Farm, led us on an epic odyssey through the birch forest, to to the West Meadow and to the marsh along the estuary.  He taught us how to activate birds by pishing, and pointed out many plant species along the way, introducing the girls to invasive and native plants as we encountered them.

Each girl has their own journal and tote bag of supplies.
In each journal is a prompt for what they should be observing and recording in their log.
