Sharing and Community Building...

Utilizing both culinary and visual art curriculum, our “Family Traditions” project centers on sharing family and/or cultural recipes—and the stories behind them. Students take turns sharing their story and leading the group in preparing their chosen dish together, building leadership and life skills while learning about one another’s backgrounds and traditions.

Adapted for both Afterschool and Outreach programs, the project evolves with each group and often culminates in illustrated recipe panels that combine writing, reflection, and visual art inspired by each dish’s ingredients and story. In addition to our Core Afterschool group, this project was also created with students at Portland High School in partnership with the Portland Mentoring Alliance.

NOTE TO SELF: CIRCLE BACK! The work shown here includes samples from both these groups.
